Mass Dances and Workshop Notes - Cuckoo's Nest

Style: Border
Tune: "Cuckoo's Nest"

As taught by Ric Goldman

Foreman's notes:

This is a 2-person dance, often done as longways set of pairs facing each other for as many as will.  Short sticks, on right shoulder when not in use.  Right footed dance.  Single stepping ("step hops") used throughout.

Sequence: Foot-up and in; chorus; waist swing; chorus; back-to-back; chorus; quarters; chorus; circles; last chorus.

Musicians' notes: after a short lead in, music is AB throughout.

A: Foot-up and in

Facing up, do 8 single steps in place.  Turn face across and do 8 single steps opposite partner.

B: Chorus

Nap sticks 3 times (all forehand) while dancing 2 single steps in place.  Then, trade places (passing right shoulder) using 2 more single steps.

Repeat this sequence 3 more times (ending back in original places).

A: Waist swing

Take partner by left arm around their waist to swing CCW for 8 single steps.  Reverse direction (switching stick into left hand) to take partner by right arm around their waist to swing CW for single steps (ending back in original places).

B: Chorus

A: Back-to-back

Odds use 4 single steps to perform a back-to-back around evens (who are standing still).  Pass right shoulder going forward and left should coming back.

Evens use 4 singles steps to perform a back-to-back around odds (who are now standing still) in the same manner.

Repeat all this (total of 2 back-to-backs for each)

B: Chorus

A: Quarters

Clash right-to-left butts, then left-to-right tips while dancing 2 single steps in place (one on each step of the step hop).  Then take two more single steps turn out (CW) while moving CCW quarter way round the set, ending facing partner up and down along a long line (similar to a contra dance Petronella turn).

Repeat this again to end up facing each other across the set from partner's place.

Repeat all this 2 more times to return to original places.

B: Chorus

A: Circles

Partners dance 16 single steps in right shoulder gypsy while moving arm in a circle to clash at the top and then at the bottom as you cross over.  Circle a total of 4 times around.  End in original places.

B: Last Chorus

Same as regular chorus except that on the last (fourth) crossover back to place, end facing away from partner holding stick overhead in both hands.  (Alternate ending - all end facing up towards the music).
